What Does Leadership Really Look Like Today?

When you think of the word leader, what comes to mind?
A big title? A loud voice in a boardroom? Hate to be the one to say it, but for most, the first image might still be a man.
Truth is, leadership doesn’t have to look like the image we’ve been sold. It’s time to redefine what leadership actually means, because it starts long before you get the corner office (or even the job title).
Leadership today looks like speaking up in a meeting. Taking initiative. Supporting the people around you. Being curious. Owning your ideas. It’s about self-awareness, empathy, communication, and quiet confidence.
You don’t have to wait until you’ve “earned” it, leadership begins with how you show up every day.
So no, you don’t need to have it all figured out or tick every box. You just need the willingness to grow and the support to get there.
A recent press release from the UK Department for Business and Trade shared findings from the FTSE Women Leaders Review, showing women now hold 43% of company board roles and 35.3% of leadership roles across the 350 FTSE companies.
The Women in Business 2025 report also found that 34% of mid-market senior management roles are held by women.
The narrative is changing. Slowly, but surely, we’re making space. And while there’s still a long way to go, we’re moving in the right direction.
So, how do we keep this momentum going?
Aluma exists to connect current women leaders with new and determined talent, from students to early-career professionals. We’re here for every woman fighting to get a seat at the table.
Because becoming a leader doesn’t start when someone gives you permission. It starts when you decide to show up, with intention, with confidence, and with the belief that you belong there.
And at Aluma, we’re building the network, tools, and mentorship to help you do exactly that.
Leadership looks like you.
